Chief Information Technology Officer

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the President, the Chief Information Technology Officer is a member of the Executive Management team and is responsible for establishing and directing the strategic design, acquisition, management and implementation of an enterprise-wide technology infrastructure for the University.  The incumbent should have a proven track record of accomplishments in complex environments, infrastructure development and systems implementation, and give strategic direction as well as guidance for the execution of all major IT capital projects of the University.

The Main Responsibilities:

  • Maintain internal IT systems, including the University information domains and business processes, and reports to the President on business models and vision issues, and collaborates with other business executives to learn their needs and develop new concepts

  • Plan the technology evolution of the University system, infrastructure and ensures that the University implements technologies in accordance with new trends in Higher Education that enhances product development; and leverages new technologies to enhance not only business infrastructure, but the internal IT operations
  • Oversee IT budgeting and business planning as well as thoroughly evaluate software and service investments, using Request for Proposal (RFP) and Request for Information (RFI) processes as appropriate, and includes stakeholders in technology decision-making

  • Collaborate with executive and senior management to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support strategic IT initiatives across all areas of the organization
  • ·
  • Establish and direct the strategic long-term goals, policies and procedures for an information technology department in a University; and determines the organization's long-term systems needs and any hardware acquisitions needed to accomplish the organization's business objectives

  • Lead the IT department to meet business needs; and through discussions, data analyses and other methods continually review and assess the information needs of the University

  • Provide leadership on information security and lead the University strategy for information security audits, IT documentation, ensuring security and other requirements are met by all Internet/Intranet systems, and application servers, file servers, local and wide area networks, and all infrastructure devices

  • Drive a culture for IT to be a highly responsive, reliable, and service-oriented function, focused on professional growth and performance excellence in delivering strategic and operational services

Requirements:

The preferred applicant should possess:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, or Computer Science
  • ·
  • Specialized qualifications in Planning, Information Technology Development and Management, as well as Project Management
  • ·
  • Broad managerial and executive level responsibility for supporting the technology-related requirements of a complex academic institution
  • ·
  • In-depth knowledge of Academic and Administrative processes within a university or a tertiary level institution; and technology practices in higher education
  • ·
  • Sound knowledge of strategic and operational understanding of enterprise systems, risk management, and IT security
  • ·
  • In-depth knowledge of the Information Technology development and deployment processes and the ability to apply them at the “Enterprise” level
  • ·
  • Training in strategic management
  • ·
  • Ability to lead the development and implementation of long-range strategic plans
  • ·
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large scale projects on time and on budget
  • ·
  • Customer service orientation with a focus on excellence and innovativeness
  • ·
  • Ability to manage contracts with IT vendors
  • ·
  • Operational and business planning/techniques
  • ·
  • Dynamic leadership skills, with the ability to coach, train, develop and motivate the team, while building staff confidence
  • ·
  • At least ten (10) years’ experience at the senior management level in a large organization or in a tertiary institution
